Making this sculpture gave me different feelings about breastfeeding and the mother child bond . At first, I was worried because the acrylic material that I used creates toxic fumes and it made me feel like I was creating something unnatural and again “toxic”,which contradicts the idea of breastfeeding as a natural bond between mother and child. Then I realized that once the material is set it becomes really strong and hard to break which is why I decided to keep the broken pieces from when I broke the sculpture out of the cast, to show that even though everything fell apart around the sculpture, the sculpture still remained intact.
Paper/sculpture. The idea behind this sculpture was to create something less dense and more vulnerable. Compared to the other sculptures.
Same idea in different ways. I wanted to use different materials to show the different sides of the mother child bond while nursing. I used plastic , Clay, acrylic and paper.
I came up with this drawing thinking about breastfeeding as a painful experience.
Experimenting with acrylic materials. Trying to create something bigger out of this material without inhaling toxic fumes.
Same idea as the drawings. I separated the head from the body to show how our minds are somehow changed through the experience of breastfeeding.
These drawings were supposed to demonstrate the feelings and the reactions that we experience. These emotions are intense and can’t be controlled. They happen as a consequence of our own biological composition and the reactions that they create.
Just a sketch
I moved on to something else and didn’t get a chance to finish this drawing. I was thinking about the reasons why women nowadays choose to breastfeed their babies. I think that even though we think that breastfeeding is a choice, sometimes it’s just a consequence of what society is telling us to do. Where we are in our in our lives in society affects the choices that we make and sometimes the choices are already made for us. Wether we choose to breastfeed or not the mother child bond can still exist. I was also thinking about the judgements that exist around the idea of breastfeeding .
